The best free outdoor gyms and fitness circuits in the area
Hobart locals are using equipment at two waterfront and domain sites to maintain fitness without paying membership fees.
How we reported this

Hobart City Council installed new pull-up bars and parallel bars at the Queens Domain fitness circuit in March 2025.
Free outdoor options matter now because a 2025 UTAS study recorded a 28 percent rise in adult inactivity rates across southern Tasmania since 2022. Residents cite indoor gym costs averaging 18 dollars per week as one barrier. The same study linked regular park use to lower reported stress levels among 1,200 surveyed Hobart adults.
Queens Domain stations
The Queens Domain circuit sits 800 metres north of the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens entrance on Lower Domain Road. It includes eight fixed stations spaced along a 1.2 kilometre gravel loop. Users can complete body-weight circuits or combine them with the adjacent 5 kilometre parkrun course that starts at 8 am each Saturday on the Hobart Waterfront.
Further south, the Bellerive foreshore path in Clarence holds eight pieces of equipment installed by the Clarence City Council in late 2024. The stretch runs from Kangaroo Bay to Bellerive Beach and features leg-press platforms plus balance beams set 200 metres apart. Both sites remain open 24 hours and require no booking.
Usage numbers and access
Council visitor counters recorded 4,800 individual uses at the Queens Domain stations during June 2026. The Bellerive path logged 3,100 uses in the same month. No entry fees apply at either location. Walkers reach the Domain site via the number 23 Metro bus that stops on Brooker Highway at 10 minute intervals on weekdays.
Locals can print simple circuit maps from the Hobart City Council website or pick up paper copies at the Glenorchy Library on Main Road. Those new to the equipment are advised to start with two rounds of ten repetitions per station and to check weather forecasts before heading out on kunanyi/Mt Wellington trails that connect to the Domain paths.
