How we reported this

Enrollment in group swim sessions at Tasmanian aquatic centres jumped 18 percent between January and June this year, according to figures released by the state’s recreation department.
The increase comes as more residents seek low-impact exercise that suits winter months, when outdoor trails around kunanyi become less appealing and indoor options gain attention from UTAS health studies on joint-friendly activity.
Venues drawing steady crowds
At the Hobart Aquatic Centre on Davey Street, weekday aqua aerobics classes now run six mornings a week, with an extra Saturday slot added last month to handle demand from waterfront residents. Further north, the Launceston Aquatic Centre on Invermay Road introduced a parent-and-toddler lane on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons that fills within minutes of opening each week.
Both centres also run adult learn-to-swim blocks that meet twice weekly for eight weeks. Participants pay $72 for the full course, which covers technique drills and water safety refreshers.
Local operators report that the programs attract a wide mix, from retirees recovering from knee surgery to teenagers preparing for school carnivals and parents bringing infants for their first pool visits.
Practical steps to join
Interested residents can book online through each centre’s website or visit the front desk before 8am on weekdays to secure a spot. Sessions start from $7.50 for concession holders and run for 45 minutes, with qualified instructors on deck at all times.
Anyone new to exercise should check with a GP before starting, particularly if managing an existing condition. Spaces remain available for the next block beginning 20 July at both locations.
